Sports

Blarney Street has a long tradition of sport and we are very lucky to have a staff with a wide range of sporting abilities from GAA to rock climbing to yoga. Our aim here at Blarney Street is to give every boy and girl the chance to experience as many sports as possible in an inclusive and fun manner.

In GAA, we enter competitions in both hurling and football on an annual basis. We have an extremely beneficial and long standing relationship with St.Vincent’s Hurling and Football club who provide us with both playing facilities and free in school coaching.

Mr. O Keeffe (a former Cork schoolboy player) together with Ms. O Connell coach soccer. Ms. Hannah McCarthy (a former Irish international) and Mr. Bongcayao coach basketball. Miss Guiney, a qualified Yoga instructor teaches yoga. Only in the past year Ms. Tuohy an accomplished rock climber has taken children to a climbing wall.

It should also be noted that we are the only primary school in the Northside who offer gymnastics classes as part of our curriculum every year in the first term for six weeks.

The school enters pupils into the city sports every year and we also stage an annual inclusive sports day in St Vincent’s pitches.

The school has also been very fortunate in having a new Astro turf pitch, which has been used non-stop since it’s opening.

Some of the other sports which the pupils have had an opportunity to experience in recent years include rowing, orienteering, spike ball, chess, table tennis, Olympic handball and Irish dancing.

So in conclusion we are a school very definitely on the move!
